چکیده

This paper deals with the derivation of the Gibbs equation for a nonviscous gas in the presence of heat flux. The analysis aims to shed some light on the physical interpretation of thermodynamic potentials far from equilibrium. Two different definitions for the chemical potential and thermodynamic pressure far from equilibrium are introduced: nonequilibrium chemical potential and nonequilibrium thermodynamic pressure at constant heat flux cl and nonequilibrium chemical potential and nonequilibrium thermodynamic pressure at constant J = Vq, where V is the specific volume. @ 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Schrödinger link between nonequilibrium thermodynamics and Fisher information.

It is known that equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced from a constrained Fisher information extemizing process. We show here that, more generally, both nonequilibrium and equilibrium thermodynamics can be obtained from such a Fisher treatment. Equilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to the ground-state solution, and nonequilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to excited-state solutions, of a ...

Kinetic Theory of dilute gases under nonequilibrium conditions

The significance of the recent finding of the velocity distribution function of the steady-state Boltzmann equation under a steady heat current obtained by Kim and Haykawa (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 72, 1904 (2003)) is discussed. Through the stability analysis, it seems that the steady solution is stable. One of possible applications to the nonequiliburium Knudsen effect in which one cell at equilibri...

Thermodynamic theory of phase transitions in driven lattice gases.

We formulate an approximate thermodynamic theory of the phase transition in driven lattice gases with attractive nearest-neighbor interactions. We construct the van der Waals equation of state for a driven system where a nonequilibrium chemical potential can be expressed as a function of density and driving field. A Maxwell's construction leads to the phase transition from a homogeneous fluid p...

Thermodynamics for single-molecule stretching experiments.

We show how to construct nonequilibrium thermodynamics for systems too small to be considered thermodynamically in a traditional sense. Through the use of a nonequilibrium ensemble of many replicas of the system which can be viewed as a large thermodynamic system, we discuss the validity of nonequilibrium thermodynamics relations and analyze the nature of dissipation in small systems through th...

Chaotic properties of dilute two- and three-dimensional random Lorentz gases. II. Open systems.

We calculate the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for a point particle moving in a random array of fixed hard disk or hard sphere scatterers, i.e., the disordered Lorentz gas, in a generic nonequilibrium situation. In a large system which is finite in at least some directions, and with absorbing boundary conditions, the moving particle escapes the system with probability one. However, there is a ...
